Selecting a playpen for your baby

A playpen is a high sided, enclosed play area specifically designed for babies to play so they won’t wander off.

What should you look for and what points to keep in mind while using it:

  1. Ensure that it meets the safety standards of the consumer products safety commission.
  2. Look for sturdy construction and safe mesh.
  3. Ensure the sides are at least 20 inches high from the floor of the playpen.
  4. The holes in the mesh should be no larger than 0.6 cm so that the baby’s fingers don’t get stuck.
  5. Check whether the mesh is securely attached.
  6. If there are slats, see that the slat distance is not more than 5.08 cm in width.
  7. There has to be proper padding on the top and corner rails.
  8. Do not leave baby unattended. Keep your child under supervision all the time.
  9. Never place playpen near windows or on beds for safety purposes.
  10. One should stop using the playpen when the baby reaches a height of 34 inches and its weight is more than 14 kg.
  11. Hinges and supports should always be protected.
  12. Do not put any kind of toys or blocks, using which the baby can try to climb out.
