He told them that the thief’s stick would grow two inches by the next day.The next day, Birbal summoned the servants again. He noticed that a servant’s stick was two inches shorter than the others.He knew who the thief was.The foolish thief had cut the stick shorter by two inches as he thought it would grow two inches. So, one day, he had the happy idea of buying himself a sewing machine. This machine was so fantastic that it sewed everything up within a moment. It seemed like Lemon wouldn't have to worry about his things anymore.Soon, the most important day in Lemon's life arrived. It was the day when everyone in town prepared a party for him, in celebration of Lemon's many years of service in making the citizens chuckle. On that day he wouldn't have to wear his colourful clown suit. That day he would be dressed like anyone else; very elegantly in his suit, and everyone commenting on his smart appearance.However, the night before, he had a look in his closet, and there wasn't a single suit in good condition. They were all ripped and torn, with dozens of stitching marks. Lemon couldn't possibly go to the party dressed in those. He called it his version of the hide and seek. He gave one free ticket to his show to the child who found the maximum number of missing items.One day on being asked why he did so, he said that he is still a child and his grey hair, and tiny hands and legs make him look old. He loved playing with the children. He feared that the children wouldnít want to play with him, which is why he offered one free ticket to one of them. He said that there was once a magic show in his village, and the magician turned him into an old man. He did not want anybody to make a fool out of him, thatís why he decided to be a clown. The children said that they loved him the way he was and he did not have to make anything up to play with them.The childrenís love made him realise his worth and he accepted that no matter how he looks, he will be loved by people through his actions and ways of treating them. The clown performed multiple tricks, earning a little money from his show.One day, there was a large show organised in the celebration of the mayor’s daughter’s birthday. Lots of people were invited and everyone was enjoying the show.That was when two little girls started passing jokes about the clown. As they were in the front seat, the clown heard them. He became anxious about his performance and wondered, “Was it not good? Was he alright? Did everyone think lowly of his skills?”While worrying about this, he dropped one of the juggling balls. The crowd booed him on the stage and the clown quickly, tearfully left the stage.The clown was very embarrassed about the way he had messed up. He kept on thinking, “What if that is all everyone thinks about ever again? What if he never gets to perform again? What if he never gets better? How will he earn his keep?”In the time he was worrying about his reputation and other people’s opinions, the ringmaster came to visit him. The clown did not notice him coming and felt further embarrassed when he realised that the ringmaster had been talking to him.He blushed and apologised for his disordered look and lack of focus. You must not worry about the criticism and only try to make yourself better.
