The bible gives the messages God has desired for us to understand. Following is a story from “The Bible”. Moses, the most important Jewish prophet, played many vital roles in the holy book Bible. He had appointed Joshua, one of the twelve spies of Israel sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan, to be his successor, as he was a man who loved God. God told Joshua to prepare the people to cross the river Jordan, so that they could go and take Jericho. Joshua sent two spies to scout the city, and they were given refuge by a woman named Rahab. She asked that when they took the city, they would spare her and her family. They agreed, and as she lived on the wall, she lowered them out her window to the other side. God told the people that the arc that held the Ten Commandments should be carried by twelve priests, and that they and all the people should march around the city of Jericho, sounding their trumpets once every day for six days, and on the seventh day, they were to march around it seven times. At the sound of the trumpet after the seventh round on the seventh day, the walls of Jericho would come crashing down. Joshua made the people obey, and everything happened just as God said. Joshua remembered Rahab, and took her and her family safely out of the city, after which, they burned the city of Jericho to the ground. Moral:God goes before His people and gives them victory in battle.

King Vikram was known for being just and fair. Once he was building a very grand palace for himself. The plan for the palace was ready. It was noticed that a cottage at the site of the structure would mar the beauty of the palace.The King called the owner of the cottage. He explained his difficulty to the man and offered him a big price for his cottage. But the man was very stubborn.He said, “Your Majesty, please excuse me for turning down your offer. I love this cottage more than I love myself. Here was I born. Here have I lived all these years of my life. Here do I wish to die.”The King thought that it would be unfair on his part to use any force. He said to his Minister, “Let the cottage stand here. When people see the grand palace, they will admire my sense of beauty. When they see the cottage, they will admire my sense of justice.” Moral:Sense of justice is the beauty of character.

One day Akbar was strolling in his royal garden with several courtiers. It was springtime and the garden abounded numerous brightly coloured flowers.The Rajkavi (royal poet) pointed towards a beautiful flower and said, “Look Jahanpanah, what a beautiful flower it is! No man can ever create something as beautiful as this.”Birbal was also there. He said, “I beg to differ, Rajkavi! Sometimes man can make much more beautiful things than this.”Akbar chipped in and said, “No Birbal, Rajkavi is absolutely right. This flower is really very beautiful and I don’t think that there is anything in this world that can surpass its beauty.”After a few days, Birbal presented a very skilled craftsman from Agra in the Emperor’s court. The craftsman presented a beautifully bouquet of carved marble flowers to the Emperor. The Emperor was full of praise for the intricate carving done in the bouquet, and gave him one thousand gold coins.Just then a young boy came and presented a beautiful bouquet of real flowers to the Emperor. Akbar was very happy to see it too, and gave a silver coin to the boy.Birbal was waiting for this opportunity only! He said with a meaningful smile on his face, “So, the man made thing was more beautiful than the real thing.”Akbar understood what Birbal meant by that and smiled back at his witty minister. Moral:Creativity of man can be as beautiful and valuable as natural objects.

There were nearly 5000 people gathered there to hear Jesus and watch his miracles.Many of these people were poor and hungry. But their faith was strong. They stayed on for the day, just listening to their savior without a complaint.But Jesus heart was filled with kindness. So he said to his disciple Philip ìWe must feed these people.î But Philip told Jesus that they didn't have enough money to feed all these people.On hearing this, Another of Jesus disciples, Andrew, said, ìThere is little food we have ñ five loaves of bread and two fish. But we cannot feed 5000 people with this food.But Jesus, the miracle maker, didn't utter a word. He took the food and blessed it. Then he began to distribute the food among his followers. And the food refused to run out!All the 5000 people ate to their heart's content and still there were 12 bucketfuls of leftover food remaining!Seeing this miracle, the gathered people tried to make Jesus their King. What they didn't know yet was that Jesus was God's son! Moral:Believe in God and you'll never go hungry

Once a cat and a fox were discussing about hounds. "I hate hounds," said the fox. "So do I," said the cat. “They are swift runners,” said the fox, "but they can't catch me, I know many tricks to get away from them.""What tricks can you perform?" asked the cat. "A lot of tricks," boasted the fox. "I can run along a thorny hedge. I can hide amidst thick bushes. I can hide in burrows. These are only a few of the many tricks that I can perform," said the fox."I know only one good trick," said the cat. "How sad! Only one trick? What is it?" asked the fox."I am going to do it just now. Look out, the hounds are coming," said the cat and ran up a nearby tree. There she was safe from the hounds.The hounds chased the fox. He tried one trick after another. But the hounds caught him at last and killed him."My one trick is better than all the tricks of the poor fox," said the cat to herself. Moral:It is better to be a master of one art than to be a jack of all trades.

THE CAT AND THE FOX

Birbal was promised gifts by Emperor Akhbar himself after he claimed — on multiple occasions— to be immensely fond of Birbal and his wit.However, he did not receive anything even after a long time passed and was disappointed because of the Emperor’s unkept promise.During a stroll on River Yamuna’s bank the Emperor asked Birbal, “Why is the Camel’s neck crooked?”Birbal replied with his usual wit, “Maybe, because the camel forgot to honour his promise and according to our literature, people with unkept promises are punished with a crooked neck.”This immediately reminded Akhbar of the promise he made to Birbal and thus Birbal received the gifts he deserved.And this is how Birbal used his wit to get what he wanted without even asking for it.Moral: Sometimes it is important to be coy to get what you want rather than being direct.

Why is the camel’s neck crooked?

Over an interplanetary chat, Pancho met his friend, Zero-Zero. They became best of friends and would always talk about the things on their planets. Once, Pancho decided to finally meet his friend and booked a space flight to visit Zero-Zero on his planet. Zero-Zero welcomed Pancho gracefully and was showing him things around his planet. They were so engaged in their talks that Pancho tripped over and bumped his head on a sphere that was lying on the path. After the impact, the sphere opened up,&nbsp;and from out of it came a little man. The little man had an enormous bruise on his head, and was screaming madly.Zero-Zero was so scared that he could not even speak. Before Pancho could apologise, two giant robots turned up. The robots took out devices and scanned the place. After this, they took the little man and Pancho away at top speed.&nbsp;Pancho could not understand what was happening. In a minute, both of them were now in a large sphere in front of a very serious-looking robot. Pancho had not even settled that he heard the robot say: “go ahead”.&nbsp;Without hesitation the little man hit Pancho on his head very hard.&nbsp;After this, the robot took out a pain-measuring machine and checked Pancho’s pain. After this, the robot asked Pancho to hit the little man again with same impact, not more, not less.Pancho had no idea what was happening. He looked around him. Through the transparent walls he could see many other spheres,&nbsp;each one containing a robot dressed, along with people hitting and pushing each other. The little man, standing before him, looked at Pancho with fear. “You may hit him. Remember, no more than on the card,” said the robot.Pancho was not able to hit the man intentionally. The robot then explained to him, “This is a process of perfect justice. Both of you will receive exactly the same harm. If one of you exceeds the limit you will receive another card and this will go on till both of you have received equal pain."Pancho was impressed with this system of perfect justice. He thought that no one would be harmed more than anyone and everyone would suffer exactly the same. He started running to compliment about this to Zero-Zero. But the robot stopped him and asked him to finish this process of perfect justice. Pancho did not want to hit the little man so he said, “I forgive him and do not wish to hit him.” The robot still did not let him go. This made Pancho angry and irritated. He thought, “What a pain! How could it be impossible to forgive someone?” So he tore the card in two pieces and said “Look! Now there are no points left."The robot appeared to break down. It started emitting whistling noises, lots of lights all over its body lit up, and it lost control of its movements. Just before exploding, the robot returned to normal, and quietly said: “It is correct. Now you may leave.&nbsp;Thank you for using the system of perfect justice.” The door opened, and before he could run to meet greet Zero-Zero, the little man hugged Pancho and thanked him for saving his life and forgiving him.When he was leaving his sphere, he noticed so many other people hitting eachother, some lying on beds, some so injured that they could not even move. Zero-Zero explained that the main problem with the perfect justice system was that it was almost impossible to give out exactly the correct amount of harm, and the people would end up hitting each other for days and days. Everyone was so scared of this system that people started living in isolated spheres, never meeting or talking to anyone.A few days later, Pancho returned home, but his name was never forgotten on that planet. Previously, no one had forgiven anyone for anything, but thanks to him they had discovered that forgiveness is a necessary part of justice. Moral:Revenge is not the only way to gain justice. Forgiveness is equally important. Infact, forgiveness brings peace of mind but revenge always brings chaos of mind.

Perfect justice

Mahabharata is an ancient Indian epic about the brothers, Pandavas and kauravas. It describes the battle between them in the Kurukshetra war for the throne of Hastinapura. It is an epic tale that combines war, religion, philosophy and Hindu history. Following is a story from “The Mahabharata.” The Pandavas were superior to the Kauravas in every respect, both in strength and intelligence. They were greatly appreciated for their innate noble qualities. Bhishma advised Dhritarashtra to declare Yudhishthira as the crown prince of Hastinapur since he was the eldest and was endowed with all the qualities necessary in a king. Duryodhana’s jealousy of the Pandavas increased after learning that Yudhishthira would be declared the crown prince. Out of anger, Duryodhana hatched a plan to kill the Pandavas so that he could ascend the Hastinapur throne. One day Duryodhana approached his father, Dhritarashtra, and requested him to send the Pandavas to the annual Pashupati fair in Varnavat, a place far away from Hastinapur. Ignorant of any foul play, Dhritarashtra asked the Pandavas to attend the fair. Duryodhana, on the other hand, secretly ordered his trusted aide and architect Purochana, to make a special palace, with highly inflammable materials, specially for the Pandavas (Lakshagriha – house of lacquer). His wicked plan was to burn the Pandavas alive while sleeping. The Lakshagriha was to be burnt on an Amavasya night. When that night finally reached Purochana, not knowing that the Pandavas were simply sleeping assumed them to be dead. To celebrate this Purochana began drinking and within hours was drunk. Utilizing this opportunity the Pandavas set fire to the palace and escaped through the tunnel that Vidura helped them build for emergency purposes.

Escape from Lakshagriha

Once a goat was grazing on the grassy slope of a hill. It decided to taste the grass on the hills across. A narrow log served as a bridge across the stream. While crossing the bridge, it saw another goat coming from the other side. The bridge was so narrow that only one animal could cross the bridge at a time.The first goat said to the other, "Let me pass first." "You let me pass first", shouted the other goat. They started arguing and finally got into a terrible fight. They lost their balance and fell into the stream.The other grazing goats witnessed this and learnt a lesson. After few days, two other goats encountered the same problem.&nbsp;One goat said to the other, "I'll sit down and you can step over my body and pass." The other goat replied, "Thank you. Next time, I'll sit down and let you cross first."Thus both of them were able to cross the bridge safely.Moral: Wisdom is better than weapons of war.
