When little Maya walked into the kitchen behind her mother she whined, “I am very hungry! What should I eat?” She looked around the kitchen. There were just so many options.The roti that her mother had just made said, “Eat me! I have the right amount of carbohydrates that you need and even the fibre. Your mother just made your favourite sabzi today. Come on eat us.”The sabzi agreed. The dry fruits from the can said, “You love pistachio so much and even cashews. Eat us.”The raisin from the same can said, “Yes. And the apricot, almond and me have such high amounts of vitamins which you need to stay in good health. You should eat dry fruits.”The pizza that her father had brought for lunch said, “Eh! Enough about this health talk. You don’t always need to eat healthy food Maya. You can give yourself a break and eat something you like. You know that you love pizza.”The bread from the fridge said, “Yes, but pizza is so unhealthy. You can take me and make a sandwich, that is tastier and healthier alternative. Or you can make a burger if you like.”The instant noodles packet and the fruits from the table said similar arguments for why she should eat them but Maya was so confused as everything seemed very appealing.She looked at her mother and she smiled down at her daughter, “There are so many options Maya. But you have to find a balance. You can’t always eat unhealthy food and you can’t always avoid the food you like either. The key to a healthy life is a balanced diet.” Moral:Balanced food intake is very important to maintain a healthy body.

The importance of different types of food

A woman made roti and sabzi for her family everyday. One day she saw a man outside her kitchen window. He looked poor and hungry. So she gave him a few freshly made, hot roti and sabzi.After that, he started coming to her house, asking for food everyday.Soon, the woman grew irritated because she felt like he was leeching off of her. One day she decided to refuse to give him any food. She decided to send him away but when he appeared, she changed her mind. How could she send away a person in need when she could help him.Immediately, she gave him food as she did everyday and he smiled and went away. After some days, the man came to her twice a day and despite her irritation, she kept her mouth shut and gave him warm roti every time. After all, she was a good woman who had resources to help the man, so she knew that it was only morally correct to do so.This went on for many months and then the man suddenly stopped coming. At first she felt a little relief but after some time, she was a little worried for him. One day when she was out in the village, she asked some people if they had seen the man but she received little response.That was when a poor little girl came up to her and told her that she knew the man she was looking for. The woman frowned, “How do you know that man?”The little girl said, “He went to many houses in the village everyday to collect food for children like me so we would never go hungry.”The woman was shocked. So, that man was not just a lazy person who conveniently begged for food rather than working. “What happened to him? I have not seen him in quite some time.” She asked.At that the little girl smiled sadly, “ He had been sick for a while before his death but he always put others before his own convenience.” Moral:Help the ones in need. You never know how far your help reaches.

Tara was always very concerned about the way she looked. She always wondered why she wasn’t as thin as the other girls or as tall as the other girls.Her friends tried to assure her that it didn’t matter, but Tara didn’t listen. One day when she was very sad, she cried about it to her mother. Her mother took her to the kitchen and said, “Here, I will make Dosa!”Tara’s face immediately lit up because it was her favourite dish. She noticed her three tiny Dosa were of different shapes. Not round at all. Once she was done, Tara’s mother asked her if she noticed any difference in her food. Tara replied, “The Dosas are unevenly shaped, Ma.”And her mother smiled, “Yes, but was there any difference in how yummy they were?” Tara shook her head.Her mother patted her daughter’s head and said, “Just like your food did not taste different because of its shape, what you have to offer and how valuable you do not depend on the way you look.” Moral:The way you look is not everything, and you can be just as valuable by being you.
