He noticed that a servant’s stick was two inches shorter than the others.He knew who the thief was.The foolish thief had cut the stick shorter by two inches as he thought it would grow two inches. Once, a pious Brahmin named Mitra Sharma, lived in a small village. He was called by many people to conduct religious ceremonies at their homes. On one such occasion, he was rewarded with a goat by a wealthy man for his services. The Brahmin happily put the goat over his shoulders and started the journey towards his home. On the way, three conmen saw the Brahmin with the goat.All of them planned to fool the Brahmin and take away the goat. They separated from one another and took different hiding positions at three different places on the same route on which the Brahmin was going.After some time, the first conman came out of his hiding place and asked the Brahmin in a surprised tone, “Respected Sir, what are you doing? I don’t understand why a religious man like you is carrying a dog over his shoulders?”The Brahmin was shocked to hear his words. He shouted back at him, “Are you blind? Can’t you see that it is not a dog but a goat?” The cheat replied, “Dear Sir, I beg your pardon. I told you what I saw. I am sorry, if you don’t believe it.” The Brahmin was furious, but calmed down after a while and continued his journey.The Brahmin had barely walked a distance, when the second conman came out of his hiding place and asked the Brahmin, “Sir, I see that you are carrying a dead calf on your shoulders. How can you mistake a living goat for a dead calf?” The second cheat replied, “Sir, I think you don’t know how a goat looks like. I just told you what I saw. If you do not believe me, please carry on.” Now, the Brahmin was a bit confused, but continued to walk further.Now it was time for the third cheat to meet the Brahmin. He walked towards the Brahmin and asked with a big grin on face, “My dear Sir, why do you carry a donkey on your shoulders? I am sure you are a jester or else why would you do such a foolish act.” This time the Brahmin did not say anything. The third cheat walked back triumphantly to his friends; he could see that their trick was working.The Brahmin was completely bewildered and stood frozen on the road. He thought that the goat gifted by the rich man was some sort of a ghost, because it first took the shape of a dog, then a dead calf and finally transformed itself into a donkey. The Brahmin got scared to such an extent that he dropped the goat on the road and ran away from there. The three conmen had a hearty laugh at the gullible Brahmin. They picked up the goat and feasted on it. Moral:One should not get blindly carried away by what others say. We must believe our own eyes rather than believing what other people say.

Why have you selected this donkey as your fellow traveller?” The Brahmin asked nervously, “Is this animal a donkey?”“Of course, it is,” said the rogue in an asserting tone. Now the Brahmin was very much frightened. He thought that the goat was really a monster who changed his form from time to time. So he ran away, leaving the goat behind.The three rogues laughed heartily and took the goat in their possession. Moral:Don’t change your opinion simply because others do not agree with you.

Two Goats

There was a fox called Dabbu. One day, he was very happy after having a hearty meal. He had seen the lion going for a stroll after his meal and had gone into the lion’s den and gorged on the remains of the lion’s feast. It was a scrumptious meal of deer meat. “I wish I was lucky enough to have such a feast every day,” Dabbu thought. Dabbu started walking, looking at the clear sky, singing his favourite song, much contented with his lovely meal. He thought about film heroes and how they would sing and walk like this when they were in love.Dabbu wasn’t in love, but he thought that the emotional satisfaction obtained from a good meal was no less than the feeling of being in love. Dabbu’s eyes were almost filled with tears as myriad emotional thoughts crossed his mind, when he suddenly found himself falling into something really deep.“Dhuuummm, dhumm,” the sound came, and Dabbu understood that he was in trouble. On looking around he realized that he had fallen into a shallow well. He was lucky that there wasn’t much water in the well. It was a wide mouthed well that Dabbu had noticed every day while passing by it. It was only today that he was lost in his thoughts and had simply overlooked it. Dabbu was really angry at himself for being so foolish and careless and wanted to hit himself.He tried his best to get out of the well by climbing on its walls, but all in vain as the walls were too slippery. Frustrated, he waited for someone to come to help.Suddenly, Dabbu heard a squeaky voice, “What on earth are you doing down there?” Dabbu looked up and much to his relief he found Laadla the goat standing at the mouth of the well. He was a young and gullible goat. Dabbu knew that Laadla was innocent and ignorant of the world, as he was always asking very irritating questions. Dabbu was determined to get out of the well using Laadla’s help. It has never been difficult for a fox to fool a goat. He said, “Aren’t you aware that there has been a huge drought in the northern part of Bihar (they lived in a jungle in Bihar)?” “Really? I haven’t heard of any such thing” said the innocent goat. Dabbu replied, “That’s strange. Shantaram crow gave me the news this morning and he has also seen it with his own eyes as he was travelling from the same area. That is why I jumped into this well to save some water for myself.”“Oh God, how terrible!” exclaimed Laadla and jumped into the well in no time. As soon as Laadla jumped into the well, Dabbu climbed on his long horns and jumped out of the well. Dabbu said, “You are such a silly creature. You are not even aware that there have been floods all around the northern part of the country, and you believed my story of a drought. Instead of talking about a frog in a well, now people will talk about a goat in a well.”Laadla was stupefied and said to himself, “One should never trust anyone blindly.” Moral:One should never trust anyone blindly. Always use your wisdom and analyse the situation before putting in your trust.

The fox and the goat

Once upon a time, a goat lived in a forest with her seven lambs. Every day, the goat used to go out in search of food while the seven little lambs stayed back at home and waited for her. Every time, before going out the goat warned her lambs to be careful and explained, “There is a bad wolf that lives in the forest. When I am away, he will try to come and eat you. You must not open the door for him. He has a gruff voice and a bushy tail. Open the door only for me and no one else.”Soon the wolf found out about the little lambs and wanted to eat them. He started roaming around that place, looking for an opportunity. One day, while the goat was away looking for food, the wolf came to the door and knocked. The lambs asked from inside, “Who is there?” The wolf replied in his heavy, rough voice, “Your mother.” But the lambs recognized the voice and said, “You are not our mother. You have a gruff voice. You are the wolf.” The wolf went away disappointed.The next day, the wolf thought of trying the trick again. But, this time, he swallowed a lot of butter to make his voice less gruff. Then he went and knocked at the door of the goat’s house when the goat was away. Again, the lambs inquired who it was. The wolf replied in a soft voice, “Your mother. Open the door, dear children.” The lambs heard the smooth voice but were not convinced. They said, “Show us your tail.” So, the wolf let his tail in through the crack in the door. The lambs saw that it was hairy and bushy. They said, “Go away. You are not our mother. You are the wolf. Your tail is hairy.”The wolf had to return hungry once again. But the next day, along with swallowing a lot of butter, he also tied a silken cloth around his tail. Once again, he knocked at the lambs’ door and spoke in a soft voice, “Mommy’s back. Open the door for me.” The lambs again said, “Show us your tail first.” The wolf let his tail slide inside. The lambs felt it and found it smooth and soft. They did not have any doubt left so they opened the door. Immediately the wolf pounced on them and swallowed them in big gulps. But one lamb, who was taking a shower in the bathroom, was saved. The wolf left the house and satisfied with his enormous meal, he lay down under a tree near the river and went to sleep.When the goat came back, she was filled with sorrow to find six of her lambs gone. The remaining lamb told her the whole story and both of them went out to look for the wolf. They found him in a deep sleep near the river. They also saw that some things were jumping inside the wolf’s stomach. Quietly, the goat and the lamb crept close to the wolf. They cut a slit in the wolf’s stomach and one by one rescued all the six lambs. But each time they took out a lamb, they placed a heavy stone inside the wolf’s stomach in place of the lamb so that the wolf did not wake up. When all six lambs were out of the wolf’s stomach, they stitched it up back again and hurried back to their house.After a while, the wolf woke up and felt thirsty. He thought of going to the nearby river to have water. He stood up but his stomach felt very heavy. He could not walk properly. He wobbled up to the river but on reaching the bank, he was unable to maintain his balance and fell into the river and drowned. The goat and her lambs did not face any danger now. They lived freely and happily. Moral:Families always stand by each other and protect one another in all the difficult situations.

Once upon a time, hundreds of wild goats lived in a cave situated upon a hill. A wolf also lived with his wife in another cave nearby. Just like all the other wolves, the wolf couple also liked the taste of goat-meat. So they caught the goats, one after another, and ate them all. But, there was one wise goat who always managed to outsmart the wolf couple. No matter how hard the wolf couple tried to catch the wise goat, she somehow always outsmarted them.One day the wolf said to his wife, "My dear, let us play a trick on that wise goat. You go alone to her cave and tell her that I am dead. Try to win over her sympathy by looking sad and then seek her help in burying my body. The she-wolf said, “Though your foolishness has spoiled everything, I will still try once again to bring the goat back to our cave.”The she-wolf went back to the wise goat’s cave and said, "My friend, your presence is divine! The moment you came near my husband, he sprung back to life. He is now very much better. I am indeed very thankful to you. Let us be friends and have a good time together."The wise goat knew that the she-wolf was again trying to pull a trick on her. She said, “My friend, I am glad to hear the good news. We must share it with as many animals as we can. I will bring some of my friends also to your cave.
