Guru Nanak was the first of the ten gurus and the founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanak became the first Sikh Guru and the framework on which Sikhism was developed through his spiritual teachings.To transmit his beliefs, Guru Nanak travelled across South Asia and the Middle East. He advocated the existence of one God and taught his followers that through meditation and pious practices, every human being can reach out to God. Ironically, Guru Nanak did not support monk life, requesting his disciples to pursue an honest householder's life.His teachings were immortalized in the form of 974 hymns, revered as 'Guru Granth Sahib’, Sikhism's holy book. Sikhism is one of India's major religions with more than 20 million followers.Nanak was born into a Hindu middle-class family, raised by Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta, his parents. He spent most of his childhood with his sister, Bebe Nanak because he was fond of her. As a child, Nanak would often surprise everyone with his intelligence and interest in divine subjects.Nanak wanted to stay with his sister so he went to Sultanpur, where his sister stayed after marriage. Nanak would go every morning to a nearby river during his stay in Sultanpur to bathe and meditate. One fine day, as usual, he went to the river, but for three days he did not return.Nanak is believed to have gone deep into the forest and spent three days there. When he came back, he didn't utter a word. When he actually talked, he said, "There is no Hindu and no Muslim." He believed in humanity and peace.Nanak then came to be known as Guru Nanak (teacher) as he travelled far and wide to spread his teachings.
