Mahashivratri is celebrated on the fourth day of the Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. The festival commemorates their marriage. Unmarried girls fast and pray to Lord Shiva for an ideal husband. Some people also celebrate this festival by maintaining a "jaagaran", an all-night vigil and prayers offering to Lord Shiva. Fruits, leaves, sweets, and milk are offered to Lord Shiva. The Hindu mantra- Om Namah Shivaya is chanted throughout the day in Shiva temples on this day. It is believed that a person who performs sincere worship to Lord Shiva on this day is relieved from all the sins and attains moksha. Some believe that on this day, Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world. Others believe that it is the night when Lord Shiva performed the heavenly dance of creation and perseverance.

Buying Gold or silver is considered auspicious and people usually do buy these elements as a sign of a good omen. Story Behind Dhanteras:There was a king named Heema. He had a young son and he was destined to be dead by a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. When he got married, his wife kept him awake on the fourth day in order to save his husband’s life. She prepared a large heap of gold and silver coins. She lit diyas and lamps. She also sang prayers in her soulful voice to keep her husband awake. When Yama, the god of death, appeared and his eyes were glorified by the light of lamps and shine of ornaments. He could not see anything and hence he had to return. Thus, the clever wife was successful in saving his husband’s life.Thus, from that day, it is celebrated with lights and candles and people buy gold and silver and worship it to pay the tribute. 2. Kali ChaudasThe second day of Diwali week is called Kali Chaudas. It is also known as NarakChaturdasi. The day is allotted to worship Mahakali or Shakti. It is believed that on this day Kali killed the most dangerous demon Narakasura. This day is to abolish Laziness and evil in our life. By killing the demon, the world was freed from fear. It is believed that one should not light diyas or step out on this day and rather stay at home and relax. 3. DiwaliFinally, the third day of the week is celebrated as Diwali. It is the celebration of light over darkness. It holds the meaning that light dispels the darkness of ignorance. The sole purpose of firecrackers and lights is to glorify the light of God. On this day, people clean their houses, light diyas, wear new clothes and worship Goddess Laxmi. The Goddess is worshipped for wealth and prosperity. Lakshmi puja is the most important of all rituals.Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama from his fourteen year-long exiles after defeating the demon king Ravana. The return of Lord Ram was celebrated by lighting diyas and decorations in the city of Ayodhya. People cleaned their houses and lit up diyas in order to celebrate the return of Lord Rama. The sisters pray to God for the long and prosperous life of their brothers. On this day, sisters request their brothers to come to their home for celebrating Bhai Dooj. The festival of Durga Pooja is observed usually in the months of September or October.&nbsp; God in the form of a divine mother is worshipped in various forms such as Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. The Goddess is one but is worshipped and represented in three different forms. It is a multi-day festival in which temples are decorated. It also features performance arts and processions. On the first three days, Durga is worshipped, then goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on the next three days and on the last three days, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped. The tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami. It symbolises the victory of Goddesses over the demon king buffalo. The festival is majorly celebrated by people living in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Odisha. It is celebrated in the honour of Goddess Durga. The primary Goddess worshipped is Durga. In Bengali tradition, the other deities next to Durga’s side- Ganesha and Kartikeya are considered to be Durga’s (Parvati) children. On the tenth day, processions with musical drum beats and chants are carried out along with clay statues of Durga. These statues are then immersed in the rivers as a goodbye to Durga and her return to divine Mount Kailash (Kailash Parbat). Goddess Durga represents the destruction of evil. The festival is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. People make special dishes, decorate their houses, wear new clothes, follow rituals and worship Goddess Durga.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India but the people of Maharashtra celebrate it with the most zeal. It is believed that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from dirt off her body while having a bath. Then, Parvati set Ganesha out of the door to guard while she finished her bath. Shiva returned and Ganesh did not know him so he stopped him from entering. Shiva too did not know Ganesha. He got angry and used his Trishul and threw it towards Ganesha. The trishul went through the neck of Ganesha and his head fell down. When Parvati returned, she was shocked to see this. She became very angry. Shiva promised that Ganesha would live again.&nbsp; Shiva directed every God to go in search of the head of a dead person. The only head they could find was of an elephant. Shiva fixed the elephant’s head on the child and Ganesha came back to life.&nbsp; Lord Ganesha is considered as the symbol of wisdom, good fortune, and luck. Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. It is a ten-day-long festival and people celebrate by bringing an idol of Lord Ganesha in their homes. After ten days, the idol is immersed in the water and the day is called Ganesh Visarjan.&nbsp; The festival is loved by everyone. People celebrate it with great love and enthusiasm.
