His wish was granted.Extremely excited, Midas went home to his wife and daughter touching pebbles, rocks, and plants on the way, which turned into gold.As his daughter hugged him, she turned into a golden statue.Having learnt his lesson, Midas begged the Satyr to reverse the spell who granted that everything would go back to their original state.Moral of the story: Stay content and grateful for what you have. He told them that the thief’s stick would grow two inches by the next day.The next day, Birbal summoned the servants again. He noticed that a servant’s stick was two inches shorter than the others.He knew who the thief was.The foolish thief had cut the stick shorter by two inches as he thought it would grow two inches. Thus, proving his guilt.Moral of the story: Truth and justice will always prevail. <h3>4. But keep falling back.Soon, one of the two frogs started to believe the other frogs — that they’ll never be able to escape the pit and eventually died after giving up.The other frog keeps trying and eventually jumps so high that he escapes the pit. The other frogs were shocked at this and wondered how he did it.The difference was that the second frog was deaf and couldn’t hear the discouragement of the group. Billy was really excited today as it was the CIRCUS DAY and Billy loved going to the circus – all the animals and the people. It was so much fun!Billy along with his parents arrived at the huge red and white striped tent called the ‘Big Top’ at 8 o’clock sharp. The ringmaster shouted with his huge booming voice, ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!’The first act of the evening was of a man and a woman dressed in sparkly clothes balancing on a huge swing at the top of the circus tent. They flew through the air. “Ooooo!” shouted the people every time they flew. It was very, very exciting.Next came in six huge and fierce looking lions along with a man. Billy watched as the man put his head in the biggest lion’s mouth. ‘Ooooo!’ shouted the people in horror and amazement.Now was the turn for the clowns. They wore brightly coloured clothes – blue and yellow and red with spots of green. The clowns had painted their faces with different colours and they had red coloured nose and hair. They fell over, told lots of jokes and did lots of very silly things. “Ha, ha, ha!” laughed everyone in the audience – and Billy laughed too.Finally, in the end it was time for the act of the elephants. There were three enormous grey elephants and one smaller one. The small one balanced on one leg and did lots of tricks. Then it stopped and looked up at Billy. “Hello,” said Billy to the elephant. “I’m Billy.”“I’m Minny,” replied the elephant to Billy’s surprise. Then all of a sudden MInny ran towards the door and barged out of the tent and on to the streets of the town. All the people rushed out of the circus tent screaming, “Aagh! The elephant – it’s escaped!” “Help!” cried the ringmaster. “Minny the elephant has escaped!”Minny was very happy as it was the first time she had been out of the circus! She felt good to be free and loved running about in the streets of the town! She ran along the main street towards the main square. She saw the fountain in the middle of the square and climbed into the big fountain to sit down in the water.People tried to walk by but Minny sprayed water at them using her huge trunk! “Oh, this is much more fun than the circus!” cried Minny. After a while Minny decided to explore the town. She went into the big supermarket. The people in the supermarket started screaming on seeing Minny and ran out of the supermarket. Minny had a wonderful time – she helped herself to the bananas and scoffed a large chocolate cake, ten packets of biscuits and a large number of buns.After she had eaten to her full capacity, Minny decided to explore again so she went out into the street. In the distance, Minny saw a big house but there was something strange about it – there was a red light all around it.Minny walked towards the house and heard people in the house shouting and screaming. “Help!” they shouted. “Save us!” Minny rushed into the garden opposite the house where there was a big pond with lots of water. She put her trunk in the water and took in as much water as she could. Then she rushed over to the house and sprayed the house with water. She repeated spraying the water from her trunk many times to clear out the flames and fire.Minny could see a small boy standing at a window at the top. The boy quickly opened the window and Minny took him out of the house using her trunk. “Minny!” he cried. “It’s me!”“Hello, Billy,” said the elephant. “You saved me!” cried Billy. “You are the bravest elephant in the world!” Billy’s mother and father came rushing out of the house. They couldn’t believe what they saw! Billy and their house were safe because of an elephant. The next day everyone from the town gathered around the town hall. Minny, the elephant was honoured with a special medal. Billy rode around the square on Minny’s back, waving and smiling at all the people.They went slowly back to the circus to rejoin the other elephants. Minny was so happy that she never wanted to escape from the circus again. Moral:Use your freedom for the right purposes.

CIRCUS ESCAPE

Sunny was upset today and was walking down the road when he saw an old man sitting on a chair. He was a seller of second-hand shoes. Sunny thought he looked at least 70 years old. The old man seemed so tired and nobody was buying his shoes. Sunny wanted to give him something but he had not brought anything with him.Then, a little girl came towards the old man. Sunny heard the child say, "Grandfather, may I polish your shoes?" That old man took pity on her, smiled and he gave her a shoe to polish.The girl said, "I polish the shoes because I need money to buy a new school uniform for my brother”.Sunny heard this and tears came to his eyes. The old man answered, "Oh, little girl. Just stop doing this. Come with me and I will buy you a uniform." Then they walked to a market and Sunny followed them. The old man bought her a uniform. The girl was so happy. She said, "Thank you so much for doing this. May God bless you." Then she left, leaving the old man smiling.The old man walked away from the market, but Sunny stopped him. He whispered in the old man's ear, "You are a hero! Thank you for your kindness!" As Sunny walked away, he glanced back and could see the old man still smiling.Sunny was blown away by the kindness he had just seen. Someone who had so little themselves, was able to show such incredible generosity! Amazing! Sunny's sadness had completely disappeared, chased way by the light of this kind act.Sunny began realizing that he had a lot to be thankful for. He hoped, that some day even he would be ableto show his appreciation for what he has by following the example of the old man who only had a little, but shared it so beautifully with someone who had nothing. Moral:One act of kindness inspires many others. It does not matter how much you have. If you choose to give, you are wealthy by your heart.

Mahabharata is an ancient Indian epic about the brothers, Pandavas and kauravas. It describes the battle between them in the Kurukshetra war for the throne of Hastinapura. It is an epic tale that combines war, religion, philosophy and Hindu history. Following is a story from “The Mahabharata.” When Jayadratha, the husband of Dushala, the only sister of the Kauravas, was killed by the clever plan of Krishna, Duryodhana was pacing up and down in the night and he was thinking, “What is this? The clouds just came and then went! I am not a weather-man. This Krishna is just too much.” Gandhari, his mother, was thinking, “I must protect my son. This is cheating. With Krishna on their side, Pandavas will get victory.” Gandhari thought, “I have my siddhi.” So she said, “My dear Duryodhana, come and see me in the night without any clothes. When you stand before my eyes, I will take off the blindfold and by the force of my siddhi over the years, I will make you so strong that no one can touch you.” So in the dead of the night Duryodhana went to see his mother.He saw Krishna. Duryodhana was thinking, “Of all the people in the world, why should I see this personality?” Krishna saw him and started smiling. Duryodhan became ruffled. He asked, “why are you smiling?” Krishna said, “Why do you think I am smiling? Grown up man with no clothes walking in the dead of the night. Are you mental?” Duryodhana was embarrassed and said, “No no. I am just going to see my mother.” Krishna then said, “Your mother! You are going to see your mother with no clothes on? Where have you learned your etiquette? Some decency is required. At least wear some gumcha or something and then go to see your mother. I know you have had a bad day in the battlefield but that does not mean you have to become mental.” Duryodhana thinks, “Yes, it is very bad. I am very embarrassed.” He thought to himself , “I will wear my gamcha and when I stand before my mother, I will take it off. Then everything will be alright.” So he went before his mother. Gandhari asked, “Are you ready son? Is everything as I told you?” He replied “Yes.” She opened her eyes and saw him. She went all the way down and she saw the gamcha. At the end, Duryodhana’s thighs could not be strengthened because they were covered. Gandhari tells Duryodhana, “I gave you a simple instruction to take off your clothes and stand.” He said, “I met Krishna.” Gandhari thought, “why of all people must my son meet Krishna? In the night, the Pandavas were very happy and they must have all gone to sleep. Why was Krishna roaming around?” She asked his son, “What did Krishna tell you?” He replied, “Krishna told me to wear a gamcha as it is not right to walk around without any clothes. Mother, I agreed to Him and I decided to remove the gumcha when I came to you.” But Gandhari realized with an air of resignation that no matter what she planned for her son, the truth is Krishna in a very simple and cheeky way was teaching her something that whatever plans she had for her son, were not within His line of vision. It was not going to help. She was only going to be disturbed. But till the end of the war, Gandhari could not accept this.

One day an officer of Emperor Akbar’s court had a challenge with a poor man. He said to the poor man, “I will give you five gold coins if you stay in the cold water of the pond for one full night.” The poor man accepted the challenge because he was badly in need of money.The next evening the poor man stepped into the pond and spent the whole night in the cold water of the pond. Guards were posted at the pond to keep a watch over the man. They reported to the officer in the morning that the man had spent the whole night standing in the pond. But the officer did not intend to pay five gold coins.When the poor man went to the officer to collect the reward, the officer asked him, “Was there a lamp near the pond?” “Yes, Sir,” replied the man. “Did you look at the lamp?” asked the officer. “Yes Sir, I did look at the lamp,” said the poor man.“There you are!” said the officer. “You could stand in the cold water because you had received heat from the lamp. You have no right to ask for the reward.” And he drove away the poor man.The poor man went to Birbal for help. Birbal listened to the poor man’s story. “Don’t worry. I'll get you justice,” promised Birbal and sent him away. The next day Birbal did not go to the court. Emperor Akbar sent his men to find out the reason for Birbal’s absence. The men returned to the Emperor and said, “Your Majesty, Birbal says that he is busy cooking. He will come as soon as his meal is cooked.”Birbal’s strange reply surprised Emperor Akbar. So he went himself to Birbal’s house. He was more surprised when he saw the scene in the compound of Birbal’s house. Birbal was blowing a fire on the ground. An earthen pot was hanging high up on a bamboo pole.The Emperor said, “Birbal, what is all this tomfoolery about? How can the heat of the fire on the ground ever reach the pot hanging so high up?” Birbal replied, “If a man standing in the pond can receive heat from the lamp at the pond, why can’t the pot receive heat from the fire on the ground?”The Emperor asked Birbal to explain his point clearly. Then Birbal told him how the poor man was wronged by one of the officers of the royal court.Emperor Akbar at once sent for the officer and the poor man. He listened to both the parties. Then he commanded the officer, “You have lost the challenge and you must pay five gold coins to this man right now.”The officer had to obey the Emperor’s order. He paid five gold coins to the poor man. The man thanked the Emperor and Birbal for their help. Moral:Use your wisdom for the good of others.

King Yudhishtira is sure that he is going to live up to tomorrow. He is quite sure about this. Yudhishtira Maharaj realized his folly that no one knows what is going to happen tomorrow, and he immediately called the man and gave him charity.

An old woman had two servants. Every day the woman would wake up as soon as her cock started crowing. Then she would rouse the servants as well and ask them to begin the day's work.The servants did not like to get up early in the morning. All the time they were thinking what to do to have longer and undisturbed sleep in the morning.One day one servant said to the other, "Let us kill the cock. If there is no cock, there will be no crowing. If there is no crowing, the mistress won't wake up early in the morning. If she does not wake up early in the morning, she will not disturb our quiet sleep."The other servant agreed. So the next day they killed the cock. Now that there was no cock, the old woman would not know the exact time. She would wake up even earlier than before. Once she was out of her bed, she would not let her servants remain in bed.The cock was gone. But the servants had a harder time than before. Moral:A wrong remedy is worse than the disease.

Once upon a time there was a generous goose who had beautiful golden feathers. The goose lived in a big pond of clear water. Not very far away from this pond, there lived a poor woman. She had two daughters and despite working very hard all day long, she could not earn enough money for her family. The goose could see that the woman and her daughters were leading a very tough life. So, one day, the goose said to himself, “If I give one of my golden feathers to the poor woman every day, she can sell it and live comfortably with her daughters. Helping someone in need is a noble job, so I must lend a hand to solve their problems.” Next day, the goose went to meet the poor woman. Seeing the goose, the woman said, “Why have you come here? We have nothing to give you.”“But I have something to give you.” said the goose. “Look at my feathers, I am no ordinary goose. I will give you one of my golden feathers every day. If you sell them in the market, you will get a good amount of money and then you can start living an easy life with your daughters.”The woman’s happiness knew no bounds and she thought that the goose was some angel sent by the deities above. From that day onwards, the goose gave one of his feathers every day to the woman and her daughters. The woman sold the lovely feathers of the goose and got enough money in return to keep herself and her daughters in comfort.One day greed overpowered the woman and she said to her daughters, “We must not trust this goose blindly. What if he flies away one day and never comes back? Then we would become poor once again. Let us pluck all his feathers when he will come to visit us the next time.” The daughters refused to be a part of their mother’s diabolical plan.The woman was determined to execute her plan. The next time when the golden goose came, she nabbed him by the neck and pulled out all of his feathers. As soon as the feathers got detached from the goose’s body, they mysteriously turned white, just like ordinary feathers. The golden goose cried out in anguish, “You foolish woman! Look what you have done! If someone plucks the feathers of a golden goose without his wish, they turn white and no longer remain of any value.” The greedy woman was very ashamed of herself and repented what she had done. As time went on, the feathers of the goose grew again. He then flew away to a distant land and never came back. Moral:Something that does not belong to you is not yours to take.

The golden goose

Emperor Akbar was very much fond of Birbal and favoured him. This made the other courtiers at Akbar’s court jealous of Birbal. They, and many other people in the kingdom, continuously plotted for Birbal’s downfall, but were never able to succeed in their plans.The Emperor’s barber was also very jealous of Birbal. One day, he hatched a vicious plan against Birbal. He went to trim the Emperor’s beard and said, “Sir, last night I dreamt about your father.” The Emperor got interested, so he asked, “Really? What did he say to you?”The shrewd barber replied, “Sir, he said that he was extremely happy in paradise, but sometimes he feels a great absence of a quick witted man who can amuse him.” He further added, “Jahanpanah, you must do something about it. You must send someone with a good sense of humour for his recreation. I am sure your father will be very happy with you then and shower you with his choicest blessings.”On seeing the Emperor caught in a dilemma as to whom to send, he suggested Birbal’s name. Akbar also wholeheartedly agreed with the barber.Next day, the Emperor summoned Birbal and said, “Birbal, I firmly believe that you are extremely loyal to me and can sacrifice anything for me. Am I right? ”Birbal instantly replied, “Yes Jahanpanah! That is absolutely right.”“Then Birbal, please go to heaven to give company to my dear father,” said the Emperor.Birbal did not take time to understand that this was another diabolical plan of somebody to get him killed.He politely said, “I will do so, but I need a few days to prepare myself to go to heaven.”The Emperor said, “Yes, sure! I grant you one week to prepare yourself to go to heaven.”Birbal went back to his home and started to think of a suitable plan to save his life and then, a nice idea struck him. He dug a ditch near his house which would serve as his grave, and through that ditch, dug a tunnel that opened in one of the rooms of his house.Once everything was done, he reported back to the court and said, ” I am ready, His Majesty, but there are two conditions.”The Emperor said, “Yes Birbal, it would be my pleasure to fulfill your last wishes. Tell me, what are your conditions?Birbal said, “His majesty, I wish to be buried near my house. And I want to be buried alive so that I can reach heaven alive to amuse your dear father.”Akbar readily agreed upon Birbal’s conditions. All the jealous courtiers and the barber were elated to know that soon they will get rid of Birbal.So, a date was chosen and Birbal was buried alive near his house. After the burial, Birbal made his way to his house and lived there in confinement for six months. Meanwhile, he also came to know that the Emperor’s barber had masterminded the plan of getting him killed. After six months, he came out of hiding with a grown beard and shabby hair and presented himself before the Emperor.Akbar was overjoyed to see Birbal once again. He asked him excitedly, “Birbal, you are back! How is my father? Did he send you back or is there something else?”Birbal said, “Your Majesty, all is well in heaven. I was there with your dear father. He was so happy with my services that he gave me special permission to return to earth to entertain his favourite son.”Akbar was very happy to hear this and wanted to know more about his father. He asked Birbal, “Did he send any message for me?”Birbal said, “Yes, Your Majesty, there is not even a single barber in heaven. You can easily make this out by looking at my grown beard and shabby hair. So, he has asked to send your own barber to him immediately.”Akbar understood everything. He handsomely rewarded Birbal and sentenced his barber to life imprisonment. Moral:Trying to trick someone more intelligent than you can bring your downfall.
