Midas helped the Satyr and asked for his wish to be granted in return.The Satyr agreed and Midas wished for everything he touched to be turned to gold. His wish was granted.Extremely excited, Midas went home to his wife and daughter touching pebbles, rocks, and plants on the way, which turned into gold.As his daughter hugged him, she turned into a golden statue.Having learnt his lesson, Midas begged the Satyr to reverse the spell who granted that everything would go back to their original state.Moral of the story: Stay content and grateful for what you have. He told them that the thief’s stick would grow two inches by the next day.The next day, Birbal summoned the servants again. He noticed that a servant’s stick was two inches shorter than the others.He knew who the thief was.The foolish thief had cut the stick shorter by two inches as he thought it would grow two inches. Thus, proving his guilt.Moral of the story: Truth and justice will always prevail. <h3>4. Suddenly, two frogs in the group accidentally fell into a deep pit.The other frogs worried about their friends in the pit.Seeing how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that there was no way they could escape the deep pit and that there was no point in trying.They continued to constantly discourage them as the two frogs tried to jump out of the pit. But keep falling back.Soon, one of the two frogs started to believe the other frogs — that they’ll never be able to escape the pit and eventually died after giving up.The other frog keeps trying and eventually jumps so high that he escapes the pit. The other frogs were shocked at this and wondered how he did it.The difference was that the second frog was deaf and couldn’t hear the discouragement of the group. All gods, one day went to Lord Vishnu seeking help to save them from the attack of the demons. Lord Vishnu said he did not have enough power to fight with the demons. He said he would need Lord Shiva’s help. So, he went to Kailash to seek help from Lord Shiva. When he reached Kailash, he found Lord Shiva in a deep trance. Lord Vishnu did not want to disturb him so he decidedto pray for Shiva until he came out of his trance.Vishnu would chant the name of Shiva thousand times every day by offering one lotus flower against each chant. He used to do that every day while waiting for Lord Shiva to come out of his meditation. One day, not knowing that Shiva had come out of his trance, Vishnu continued his chanting for the day. Shiva decided to play a trick on Vishnu.Lord Shiva secretly removed one lotus from the bunch that Vishnu had arranged. After Vishnu chanted for 999 times, he realized that one flower was missing from his collection. He immediately plucked his one eye and offered it at the feet of the Shiva. Impressed by Vishnu’s devotion, Shiva told him to ask for a boon. Vishnu asked him to give the power to defeat the demons to save all the gods. Lord Shiva gave him a round disc known as ‘Sudarshana Chakra’ which has the power to kill anything.

The story of Sudarshana Chakra

Once Sage Durvasa cursed all the gods and all of them lost their powers. They were powerless and deprived of all the fortunes. The gods went to seek help from Lord Vishnu. He suggested them to churn the ocean to retrieve nectar that can help them become immortal and regain their lost glory.The gods partnered with the demons to combine their strength for churning the ocean. They used Vasuki, the serpent as a churning rope and the mount Mandara as the churning staff. Lord Vishnu took the Kurma avatar and stood below mount Mandara, while the gods and demons churned the ocean.While churning the ocean, various gems and precious stones came out of the ocean. Along with them, ‘halahala’ poison came out from the ocean. Halahala was a dangerous poison that could wipe out all creation. The terrified Gods and demons approached Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu advised them to seek help from Lord Shiva, as he is the only one who could protect them. Lord Shiva, out of compassion, swallowed the poison. But he squeezed his throat to prevent the poison from entering into his body. Thus, the poison was stuck in Shiva’s throat and it was so potent that it changed the colour of Shiva’s neck to blue.The poison turns Shiva’s throat blue and hence he is also called Neelkanth, wherein Neel means ‘blue’ and Kanth means ‘throat’.

Lord Shiva and the halahala poison

Shivratri is an important Indian festival. It is celebrated in regards to Lord Shiva’s worship. It has accorded a lot of significance in Hindu mythology. Shivratri is observed once in every month (on the month's 13th night/14th day) but Mahashivratri is celebrated once in a year (the month of February/March, or phalgun). The festival is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm. Devotees observe various fasts and pujas on this day. Mahashivratri is celebrated on the fourth day of the Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. The festival commemorates their marriage. Unmarried girls fast and pray to Lord Shiva for an ideal husband. Some people also celebrate this festival by maintaining a "jaagaran", an all-night vigil and prayers offering to Lord Shiva. Fruits, leaves, sweets, and milk are offered to Lord Shiva. The Hindu mantra- Om Namah Shivaya is chanted throughout the day in Shiva temples on this day. It is believed that a person who performs sincere worship to Lord Shiva on this day is relieved from all the sins and attains moksha. Some believe that on this day, Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world. Others believe that it is the night when Lord Shiva performed the heavenly dance of creation and perseverance.

There is an interesting story behind the birth of Lord Shiva. Shiva is also referred to as ‘Swayambhu’ meaning self-existing because he was not born from the womb of a woman.One day, Brahma and Vishnu were arguing about their powers and importance in the universe. Both of them wanted to prove that one was mightier than the other. As they were discussing, a mysterious pillar appeared in front of them whose roots and the tip was not visible. Both of them could not understand what the pillar was and wondered if there exists any other supreme power than them.They decided to solve the mystery of the mighty pillar. Lord Brahma transformed into a goose and flew upward to find the peak of the pillar. While Lord Vishnu transformed into a boar and dug the ground to find the root. However, they could not find any of it. They could neither find its peak nor its bottom. They came back to the place where it started and noticed the emergence of Lord Shiva from the pillar. Then, they accepted the fact that Lord Shiva was the supreme power.

The birth of Lord Shiva

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India but the people of Maharashtra celebrate it with the most zeal. It is believed that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from dirt off her body while having a bath. Then, Parvati set Ganesha out of the door to guard while she finished her bath. Shiva returned and Ganesh did not know him so he stopped him from entering. Shiva too did not know Ganesha. He got angry and used his Trishul and threw it towards Ganesha. The trishul went through the neck of Ganesha and his head fell down. When Parvati returned, she was shocked to see this. She became very angry. Shiva promised that Ganesha would live again.&nbsp; Shiva directed every God to go in search of the head of a dead person. The only head they could find was of an elephant. Shiva fixed the elephant’s head on the child and Ganesha came back to life.&nbsp; Lord Ganesha is considered as the symbol of wisdom, good fortune, and luck. Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. It is a ten-day-long festival and people celebrate by bringing an idol of Lord Ganesha in their homes. After ten days, the idol is immersed in the water and the day is called Ganesh Visarjan.&nbsp; The festival is loved by everyone. People celebrate it with great love and enthusiasm. The festival not only involves prayers but also includes activities like dancing on dhols, and singing.&nbsp;

The Ramayan is an ancient Sanskrit epic written by the famous sage Valmiki. It describes Lord Rama's effort to rescue Sita from the demon king Ravana. It also describes the challenges faced by Lord Rama, Laxman, and Sita when they were exiled from the kingdom for 14 years. Following is a story from ìThe Ramayana.It is said that when Ravana abducted Mother Sita, Lord Ram was roaming around looking for her. He was crying, shouting and moaning as he was so sad. Of course, the Lord was playing a role on earth as a human, so he had to display human emotions.Lord Shiva and Mother Sati came across this scene. Lord Shiva bowed down to his Lord Rama. Mother Sati asked why he was bowing down? Lord Shiva answered because he is the Supreme Lord.Mother Sati said that he is crying like humans, how can he be God? I want to test him. Lord Shiva agreed but asked Mother Sati to stay within her principles. Mother Sati changed herself into the form of Mother Sita and appeared in front of Lord Ram, trying to confuse and fool him. Lord Ram knew she was Mother Sati and greeted her and asked her where Lord Shiva was? She was ashamed and closed her eyes. But even as her eyes were closed, Lord Rama gave her darshan along with Mother Sita.

Lord Shiva made a rule when Lord Ganesha was born, he said that to achieve success in any endeavour, Lord Ganesha must be worshipped first. So, everyone used to worship Lord Ganesha before going for a war.However, Lord Shiva forgot about his own rule and left for a war with the demons in Tripura. He did not worship Lord Ganesha before going for the war. While he was on his way in his carriage, the wheel peg got damaged. It was only then that Lord Shiva remembered that he had forgotten to offer prayers to Lord Ganesh before departing for the war.He offered his prayers to Ganesha and proceeded to the battleground. Lord Shiva won the war! Moral:You must follow certain rules, even if you are the one to define the rules.
