Science says, after 6 months, the digestive system of a child develops
completely and the child can digest almost everything. But because there are no
teeth developed, children should be given food in puree or mashed form.
Moreover, from 5-6 months, children experience orocentric reflex where a child
puts anything around him/her in his/her mouth. This is a signal which tells
children that it is time to go for foods other than mother’s milk. Semi solid or
puree foods can include Khichadi, shiro, fruit pulp, mashed potatoes, idli, etc.
For non vegetarian items you can give shredded chicken and eggs. Be careful
about the consistency so that child can easily swallow the food.
